Another example:
You can see in the figure that when a ratchet is in the full open position, both pawls (or release bars) are not engaged with the teeth and so will not hold tension. If you look at the red circles you can see the locations where the pawls are locked out of engagement and if you look at the blue circles you can see the gaps that show they are not engaged.
Make sure the ratchet is in the full open position by looking at areas noted below. (To get to the full open position pull on the manual pawl while pulling the handle into the open position.) If there is a lot of webbing wrapped around the split drum then the tension may not release immediately. Just pulling the strap away from the load will gently loosen the tension from the line.
WE DO NOT advise releasing tension by pulling on the pawls/release bars. Having your hands inside the ratchet mechanism while releasing tension could result in injury.
Also, to avoid issues releasing tension, make sure that when tightening down the load, as much slack is taken up as possible before using the ratchet to tighten down the load, so that too much webbing does not get wrapped around the drum during the tightening process.
