Circuit Breaker Capacity and Size
- The factory circuit breakers for the KX9.5 winch is three (3), 50-amp circuit breakers in parallel. This is what our factory has designed and recommends for our KX9.5 winches.
- Please see the 12V DC Performance Chart below, found on page 4 of the KX9500S owner’s manual, with the factory Motor Amp Draw specifications at the pulling range by pounds.
3. Using a “Higher Amperage Rating” circuit breaker would make the winch run longer before the circuit breakers would trip (opening the circuit) causing the winch motor to get hotter, before circuit breaker opens and provides a cooling time and protection for the winch motor. This period is also referred to and called “Duty Cycle” in the winch industry, Just FYI.
a. We do not recommend using a “Higher Rated Circuit Breaker” than supplied from the factory, WE ONLY RECOMMEND USING OUR FACTORY CIRCUIT BREAKERS.
b. We also do not recommend using a “Manual Reset Circuit Breaker”, as our automatic self-resettable breakers provide the needed cooling time for the winch motor .
4. Our automatic self-resettable circuit breakers generally can be tripped or have the circuit opened several times without causing circuit breaker damage.
a. A new circuit breaker can be order through our Customer Care Team and we would be happy to discuss and troubleshoot if an issue could be a worn-out circuit breaker with you.
b. Before changing to new circuit breaker, please time and calculate the best you can the run-time of the winch.
c. Also, please feel the winch motor to feel the temperature of the motor and if the motor is hot to the touch, BE SURE TO KEEP HANDS AND BODY AWAY FROM A RUNNING WINCH, only touch and feel the winch motor while motor/winch is not running.
d. After changing to new circuit breaker, compare the winch run time and estimated load to see if the circuit breaker trips at the same approximate time, this could be an early warning sign the winch motor or winch in general needs to be checked or needs attention.
e. If the new circuit breaker does not trip, then it is a sign that the original circuit breaker just got old and weak.
