Why do the instructions say not to install unit near air-conditioners and heaters?
Most of the time AC and Heater units create a lot of heat when pumping cold or warm air into the house. After a while that heat could start to affect the lighting fixture if it gets too hot. 4ft above the AC unit should be fine as that is still plenty of space between your lighting fixture and the unit itself.
